Aeronautic Materials, Structures & Manufacturing

AICIA offers laboratories authorized to characterize aeronautic materials, that are equipped with the latest instrumentation and have received various certifications awarded by different national and international bodies. The following are carried out in them:

• Mechanical, physical and chemical trials for the acceptance of metallic materials.
• Mechanical, physical and chemical trials for the acceptance of compound, adhesive materials.
• Autoclave Manufacture of sheets of compound materials for trials.
• Structural components of aircrafts
• Analysis of failure of aeronautical components.

Furthermore, AICIA is developing new techniques and tools for simulating and optimizing the manufacturing processes to introduce new aeronautic materials, basically carbon fibber and other compound materials such as Non Crimp Fabrics (NCF). Among the tools developed multi-scale numerical simulation in key processes for manufacturing aircraft engines and the integration of numerical tools for process simulation stand out.

The aircraft structure is a key element, therefore its correct calculation and analysis is necessary. AICIA can carry out both numerical and experimental analysis of various aircrafts.

Metallic material reception tests

AICIA is responsible for the reception of metallic materials for various firms. Reception includes a selection of destructive tests to guarantee that any batch of material received has the characteristics established in its qualification and that are used to calculate and design elements. The most significant tests used in reception are: determination of chemical composition, Rockwell B hardness, conductivity, traction (batch control and installation control), fatigue (determination of SN curve), fracture toughness (KIC), grain direction determination, exfoliation, stress corrosion, intergranular corrosion, shearing.

Compound and adhesive material reception tests

Mechanical, physical and chemical tests for the reception of compound and adhesive materials are carried out in AICIA Material Elasticity and Strength Laboratory. Reception takes in a variety of destructive tests to guarantee that any batch of material received offers the characteristics established in its qualification and that are used to calculate and design elements. The most significant tests used are: Physicochemical: void content, resin content, fibre content, density, etc., and Mechanical: traction, interlaminar shearing (SBS- Short Beam Shear), simple shearing, and flat traction. Compound Material sheets are also manufactured for autoclave tests.

Aeronautical component failure analysis

The analysis of failures in aeronautical parts is carried out in the AICIA Material Elasticity and Strength Laboratory.

Structural tests on aeronautic and aerospace components

The AICIA Material Elasticity and Strength Laboratory carries out structural tests on aeronautic components. The tests made on structural elements and systems for the A380 programme are especially important. Vibration tests on supplement cooling, static tests on the number 21 rib of the A380 wing, damage tolerance tests on a panel of the Belly Fairing, fatigue tests on the opening mechanism of the actuated NACA intake of the A380 and residual tension tests for the A380 front-fitting.
